Route Latvia

The Latvian section of the R1 route begins at Butinge, just past the border with Lithuania.

In Latvia, the R1 concept of a European cycle route is still a bit new so alignment with the national cycle routes is still a little vague. However, the northern part of the route along parts of the coast is fixed.

This is a well-paved and relatively traffic-free route connecting the towns of Liepaja, Talsi, Tukums, Riga, Sigulda, Cesis and Lugazi along an east-west axis and terminates on the Latvian/Estonian border at Valka.

Pay attention to the signposting along the route to prevent accidentally straying from the route between towns.
