Route Poland
The beginning of this journey sees the traveller at the border crossing Kostrzyn on the river Oder between Germany and Poland.
The route through Poland is characterised by good signposting and road quality comparable to Germany.
The fact most of the route consists of well paved country roads should not be seen as a problem, since traffic density in Poland is low.
Almost 40% of the polish R1 run through natural forest that displays its health through abundant wildlife.
The R1 entertains the traveller with a number of lakes, rivers, nature reserves as well as national parks.
Along the way, towns such as Sulecin, Miedzyrzecz, Drezdenko, Pila, Bydgoszcz, Chelmno, Grudziadz, Elblag, Frombork and Braniewo provide architectural heritage next to contemporary amenities such as hotels, restaurants and museums.
The practical requirements of a cyclist are met by bicycle workshops and service centres.
The R1 route in Poland often crosses the Berlin-Gdansk railway line which allows tourists to begin and end their tour where they like. What makes the R1 even more attractive is that the planner designed it to cross some of Poland’s best hiking country such as the Lebus region.
This, along with excellent signposting and infrastructure, makes small detours enjoyable and easy.
The part of the route in north-eastern Poland even approaches the Baltic beaches, opening the possibility for a roast in the sun and a dip in the sea.
But BEWARE! An agreement between Poland and Russia previously prevented cyclists from crossing the border at Gronowo/Mamonovo, so some complications cannot be ruled out.
