Route Belgium
In Belgium, the R1 follows the national Route LF1, the so-called Vlaanderenfietsroute or Noordzeeroute.
Beginning at Diksmuide on the border with France, the route snakes through West Flanderstowards the coast.
The first coastal town is Nieuwpoort.
From here the LF1 is identical with the LF511, which leads eastwards along the Flanders’ coast.
Both routes connect Oudenburg, Brugge, and Damme, where the border to the Netherlands is reached.
Belgium offers the best cycle routes in the world.
Here you can cycle from north to south and from east to west through beautiful landscapes and nature parks without being disturbed by the noise of motor traffic.
The route has been mainly laid out on bikeways running parallel to country roads and in part along very quiet, secluded by-roads with good cycling surfaces.
The LF1 runs about 75 kilometres through attractive parts of Flanders, passing a number of towns and villages which are worth seeing and linking the coast with the hinterland.
